Monitor Test Patterns
Use a collection of monitor test patterns to evaluate sharpness, color accuracy, contrast, geometry, and overall display performance. View each pattern in full screen for the best results.
Open the fullscreen pattern viewer and switch between color, contrast, sharpness, geometry, and gradient patterns to inspect different parts of your display.
What Are Monitor Test Patterns?
Monitor test patterns are reference images used to evaluate different aspects of display performance, including color accuracy, brightness, contrast, sharpness, geometry, and screen uniformity.
They help you identify common display issues and adjust your monitor for a clearer and more accurate viewing experience.
Common Monitor Test Patterns
Color Patterns
Solid color screens help identify dead pixels, stuck pixels, color accuracy, and display uniformity.
Brightness & Contrast Patterns
These patterns help you adjust black levels, white levels, and overall contrast to improve image visibility.
Sharpness Patterns
Sharpness patterns use fine lines and text to reveal blurry edges, scaling problems, and excessive sharpening.
Geometry Patterns
Grid patterns help detect image distortion, aspect ratio issues, and display alignment problems.
Gradient Patterns
Gradient patterns reveal color banding and show whether your monitor can display smooth color transitions.
How to Use Monitor Test Patterns
Using monitor test patterns is simple.
- Open a test pattern in full-screen mode. That gives you the cleanest possible view of the display.
- View the screen from your normal viewing position. Judge the image the way you actually use your monitor.
- Compare what you see with the expected result. Look for lines, blur, distortion, missing detail, or uneven color.
- Adjust your monitor settings if necessary. Small changes are usually easier to judge than large ones.
- Repeat the test until the image appears correct. Rechecking helps confirm that the adjustment actually improved the display.
For the most accurate results, use your monitor's native resolution and perform the test in normal lighting conditions.
What Can Test Patterns Detect?
Monitor test patterns can help identify:
- Dead or stuck pixels
- Uneven brightness
- Backlight bleed
- Color banding
- Gamma problems
- Poor sharpness
- Incorrect aspect ratio
- Geometry distortion
- Screen uniformity issues
While these tests cannot automatically diagnose hardware faults, they provide reliable visual references for evaluating display quality.
When Should You Use Test Patterns?
Setting up a new monitor
Buying a used display
Adjusting monitor settings
Editing photos or videos
Troubleshooting display problems
Comparing multiple monitors
Regular testing helps ensure your display continues to perform as expected over time.
